Today in class, Ms. Sgroi joined us for an AWESOME lesson about the states of matter! Tonight for homework your job is to determine whether Jell-O is a solid or liquid. What do you think?

I think jello is liquid that has been frozen witch makes it a solid. I think it is stuck together tightly.

So when it comes out it will be the shape that it was when it was in the container.

Just like in the Tim and Moby video. The water in the water pistol was shaped like the water pistol. Also the water in the cup was the shape of a cup.

It can really only break when u squeeze it like Liam said.
Tristan

This is why I think it is a liquid that have been turned to a solid.

I think jello is a liquid because just like water when it's really cold it is a solid but when it warms up it is liquid y

I agree because, it is first a liquid when you pour it into the container.

I think it is a liquid and solid. It stays together when you poke it with, literally, anything, but smushes apart when you squeeze it. It takes the form of whatever it is in, but feels solid when you rub your finger against the top.

Liam I think that you are right, because when you smush it, it can become the shape of anything.

on it cant be both at the same time although there is something called the double and triple point with 2 of three states of matter can exist.

It's called a colloid. Some people categorize it as another state (or phase) of matter. A trick question!

I think I reasoned it enough for it to be both

I think that jello is a solid, because when it comes out of the container it is in the same form. Also, I think that jello is a frozen liquid, because when you take it out of the container and then put it in a bag, you can break it apart. Last, I do not think that jello is a gas, because it is not like air, but it has some bubbles inside of it. So, from this I think that jello is a liquid and a solid form.

Jell-O is a semi-rigid structure suspended in a liquid. So it's something you would call 'Colloid'. If you heat it up enough, the protein structure will become dissolved again and it will become a liquid all through!

That is cool Nathan. But what does semi-rigid mean?

Colloid is a homogeneous, noncrystalline substance consisting of large molecules or ultramicroscopic particles of one substance dispersed through a second substance. Colloids include gels, sols, and emulsion; the particles do not settle and cannot be separated out by ordinary filtering or centrifuging like those in a suspension.

I think jello can be a solid or a liquid. I think it can be a solid because when you dump the jello out the cup it stays the same shape. I think it can be a liquid because when you press down on it it can change shape.

I also think that Jello is a solid and a liquid because you it can hold it's form like a solid but also is kind of watery like a liquid.

I changed my mind yet again! I think it is a liquid but frozen into a shape. I think this because I left my jello out in the sun and it melted just like ice would. Ice is just frozen water! Just like it could be a substance of flavors and other things in jello frozen.

I think that jello is a collides. A collides is a mixture of two different matters. Such as butter and paint. I found this fact in the brain pop video at 3 minutes and 52 seconds. Plus, in my experiment I found out that when you leave jello at room tempeture it will turn into a squishy liquid. So now I know that butter, paint, and jello are all collides.

I forgot to mention that when you make jello from the packet, you boil it in water, so that is making me think it is kind of a gas. I am CONFUSED!

I cant diced if it it a solid or solid and liquid. But it holds the shape so it must be a solid.

It is nether a solid or liquid because this substance is called colloid. I know this because it means it is a solid and a liquid.

Well when you make Jello its liquid but then it just becomes a weak solid. I think of solid I think concrete and you can't just carve out concrete with your hand you need something stronger. So i am saying that Jello is a liquid and jello can melt.

I think that the Jello is a liquid, but since it is very cold, I think it is frozen in a shape. When you make Jello in the end you have to put it in the fridge so it can sub-stain it's shape. If you put it out in the sun for a while it will melt just like ice!

I think Jello is a solid but when you heat it up long enough it is a liquid. I think it is a solid because if you hold it up side down then it won't come out but if you heat it up then it will move around. In all it is both a solid and liquid or a colliodal.

I think that Jello is a solid. I think this because when you turn it upside down, it will not fall and gush everywhere, like water would do. Also, in water, you can just stick your hand through it and it is smooth. But in Jello, it is a bit rough.
